Non-UMC Methodist Transfer (OE)

OE - Other United Methodist Elder, FAQs

(2020/2024 Book of Discipline ¶347 and Great Plains specific requirements)

I’m in my first year of appointment in the Great Plains. What do I need to do now if I’m thinking about transferring my membership/clergy credentialing from my home conference to the Great Plains?

  • It’s a good idea to submit your post high school (official) educational transcripts to [email protected] for evaluation as soon as you begin discerning a possible transfer request. The Board of Ordained Ministry registrar will evaluate the education in light of United States denominational requirements. The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry will be consulted if any education was completed at non-University Senate approved schools or internationally.
  • It’s also a good idea to talk with your District Superintendent as soon as you begin discerning a possible transfer request.

I’m in my first year of appointment in the Great Plains Conference and am confident that I want to remain a member of my current (home) conference. Is there anything I need to do to continue to be eligible for the Great Plains appointment?

  • As a member of another denomination, continued appointment in Great Plains is solely depending on the appropriate bishops/judicatories.

How soon can I request transfer of my clergy credentials to the Great Plains Conference?

  • Other UM clergy may request consideration for transfer in their third or more year of appointment in the Great Plains. Special consideration may be allowed for retired elders or deacons relocating to the Great Plains (no longer guaranteed appointment).

Who are the people involved in a transfer request process?

  • The bishops for the sending and receiving conferences, your Great Plains District Superintendent, and the Board of Ordained Ministry registrar are the primary persons involved in an OE transfer. If the person transferring is a provisional member, the Board of Ordained Ministry will also be involved.

What will my status be in the Great Plains Conference following a transfer request/commissioning as a provisional member?

  • You will be recognized as a Great Plains clergy person at the next Annual Conference according to your transferring status (full elder, full deacon, provisional elder, or provisional deacon).
