Alton Pope, 96; retired Great Plains Conference clergy. Born Sept. 11, 1928; died May 5, 2025.
Pope served churches in Northeast Ohio and the former Kansas East Conference, including Prairie Village Asbury (associate), Manhattan Blue Valley Memorial, Overland Park Valley View, Roeland Park, and Lawrence Central, as well as Topeka District superintendent, until his retirement in 1994.
He is survived by nine children and stepchildren: Eric Pope (Jenniphr), Jeff Pope, John Pope (Ursula), Elaine Roseberry (Jay), Mary Jane Joyce (Steve), Scott Mize (Phyllis), Mark Shumate (Darcy), David Shumate (Carol), and Melissa Shumate; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 12, at Lakeview Village, 9100 Park St., Lenexa.
